Disputing an error, free

Protecting what you build · Lesson 17 of 22 · 4 min

Errors are common: accounts you never opened, a paid balance still showing, one debt listed twice by the original lender and a collector, or someone else's account with a similar name.

File the dispute with the bureau in writing, describe exactly what is wrong, and attach copies, never originals. The bureau has 30 days to investigate and must tell you the result.

Dispute with all three bureaus separately, since they do not share corrections. Keep a copy of everything you send.

Takeaway

A dispute costs a stamp. No company can do it better than you can.
