The 30-day rule on late payments

Protecting what you build · Lesson 14 of 22 · 3 min

A payment is not reported to the bureaus until it is 30 days past the due date. Between day 1 and day 29 you may owe a late fee, but your report is untouched.

That window is your safety margin. If money is late, pay something before day 30, even partially, and call the lender to ask for a due-date change to match when you get paid.

If you already have one late payment on an otherwise clean account, ask for a goodwill adjustment in writing. Lenders sometimes remove a first offense.

Takeaway

Day 29 still counts as on time to the bureaus. Use that window, don't rely on it.
